IBA Updates

Background and Index

I've been writing weekly updates since August, 2000.  Originally they were a clipping service on new stories and research related to product development, innovation and business architectures.

Since 2003, they've served as a testing ground for new frameworks and formulations related to how to make business innovation more successful.

They often start with a piece of news around a new product or service, but then expand to consider broader issues.

I've also been working with others to jointly write "guest updates."  In 2003 and 2004, I've co-written updates with a number of management consultants and academics.  The guest updates are listed here.

Here are a few popular updates from the last couple of years (2003 and 2004):

bulletDo you have a winner? (October 2003) Lays out the four factor model for product success.

bullet Optimistic realists (July 2003) builds on an article by Kahnemann and Lovallo that talks about ways in which organizations can make systematically biased decisions.

bulletJ&J's new breakthrough (Sept 2003) examines the probability of success for J&J's new stair-climbing wheelchair.

bulletFeeding the Beast (November 2003) is about why products get designed the way they do.

Here's a chronological listing of updates from 2003 and 2004, with links.
